Key dates to pay attention to and exiting Covid-19 in schools

Key Dates

Dates to pay attention to and exiting Covid-19 in schools

Wednesday April 15th
School restarts for term two.

Monday April 20th
Cabinet meeting. Decisions about how the lockdown may or may not continue depending on what level the government determines our risk to be. The Cabinet won't make a final decision on leaving Level 4 until two days before 22 April, because it has to base that decision on the latest data.

Wednesday April 22nd
Tentative ending of the lockdown as originally planned at midnight.

Thursday April 23rd and Friday April 24th
Schools may be able to fully access school sites to undertake a property inspection and necessary maintenance and cleaning. Teachers may be back to school prior to students returning.

Monday April 27th
Public holiday (Anzac Day)

Tuesday April 28th
Will be a staff-only day according to information provided.

Wednesday April 29th

  • Schools may reopen to some degree.
  • Not everyone will return at once. Some children might return to school before others; priority would be given to the children of essential workers. It will be a progressive reopening.
  • Some schools may not open after the coronavirus lockdown lifts, and parents won't receive certainty until the Government gathers data on the spread of the virus. A hybrid model of both distance learning and on-site learning is very likely at least in the early stages" after the coronavirus lockdown ends.
  • Some teachers who are at higher risk of contracting Covid-19 might still be working from home, and reopening could differ for different age groups.
  • Timetables will be different. Some kids may be in school only part of the time and working from home some of the time.
  • Assemblies will not happen for some time and schools will be asked to limit contact.
  • By the time level 4 ends there will be a new set of rules, and they could be in place for many months. Level 3, if that is what it will still be called, might not have an exit date. The border will stay closed for a long time and at the moment there is no end point.
